In simple terms, a turbocharger is a radial fan pump that contains a gas compressor and a turbine. It is used to create forced-induction in an internal combustion engine. Similar to a supercharger, a turbocharger is designed to cause more mass of air to go into the engine. This causes the engine to have more power. The difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger is that the turbocharger’s compressor is run by a turbine which runs on the engine’s exhaust gases. The current categorisation is that a turbocharger is powered by the kinetic energy of the exhaust gases, whereas a supercharger is mechanically powered (usually by a belt from the engine's crankshaft).However, up until the mid-20th century, a turbocharger was called a "turbosupercharger" and was considered a type of supercharger.

The intake hose is between the throttle valve and the engine intake valve. It is the intake pipe from the carburetor or throttle body to the cylinder head intake duct.

It is the job of the turbocharger to compress more air flowing into the engine's cylinder. When air is compressed the oxygen molecules are packed closer together. This increase in air means that more fuel can be added for the same size naturally aspirated engine.
