A car window lifter is a device used to open and close the windows of a vehicle. It consists of two levers that are connected to a motor, which when activated, pulls and pushes the window up or down. This is usually done with either a car window lifter switch inside the vehicle, or by remote control. Car window lifters have become an important part of vehicle convenience and safety, making it easy to let fresh air into the car, as well as protecting passengers from inclement weather.

The window lift on most cars uses a really neat linkage to lift the window glass while keeping it level. A small electric motor is attached to a worm gear and several other spur gears to create a large gear reduction, giving it enough torque to lift the window.The term lifting window describes a window that opens upwards, i.e. lifts. It is often used synonymously with the term vertical sliding window but is subordinate to it in terms of terminology.
